News Update

Sorry it’s been so long since the last update, but here’s some updates:

  • My game now has a real time battle system, but it’s not that great of one
  • My controls have changed from PC to XBox 360, which is actually a change we’ll have to make for the future.
  • I have created pretty much all of my art assets, though they aren’t implemented yet.
  • I created a healing function a little while back and just finally implemented it.

In other news related to my game, the first round of game testing for the project has started. I’m sure my game will get a poor review, but I’m close to having a fun, complete game.

Scaling Back

I pitched my game idea in class, but my teacher said I’d have to scale it back. Instead of a full town-dungeon level I’m going to have to just do the dungeon and basic fighting, no boss. Well, I can always expand on it over summer.

I was working on creating a random design, but decided to drop it. I was going to use this for a website icon, but I thought it would work much better in a game. I don’t know if I’m going to use this to represent money, or some kind of item like Mini Metals in Dragon Quest, or even if I’m going to use it in my game. I just thought it looked good, and I can always use it in something else later.

Enemy Design, Slimes

While I’m waiting on more input for the plot of the game I’ll work on the one element they would have most in common: monsters. Well, technically they would be enemies, because many RPGs have common animals as enemies or other humans or humanoid creatures (e.g. elves) and monsters has such a negative connotation. The one thing I’m sure I’m going to have in either game would be a slime-creature. Probably the best know of these would be the Slime creature from the Dragon Quest/Warrior series. To avoid any possible legal issues I’m going to use my own designs.

Design 1:

I designed this one for the iPhone project I mentioned in my previous post. I was going for something slightly different, but at the same time in keeping with simplicity of slime-based creatures found in other games.

Design 2:

This design I created specifically for this project. I was trying to create a view of the other slime from the front, but the shape that resulted from reshaping a circle looking interesting so I decided to build on that.

Step 1, The Plot

Before I decide anything else about my game, I have to figure out what it’s going to be about. Here are a two ideas I have based on work I’ve already done:

  • A fairly typical base plot for a fantasy story, the hero journeys across the world searching out special artifacts (crystals) to defeat the evil King. This is based on a story idea I’ve been visiting on and off since my senior year of high school (2006/07). I already have some basic resources created for this, along with a game design document created for another class.
  • A guy from a world much like ours is chosen to defend against monsters invading from another world by summoning other monsters to fight them. I have the basis of a battle system created for this as an iPhone app created for yet another class and a few basic sprites.

I already know one thing for sure, whichever game I pick, the storyline and dialog will openly mock and parody the conventions of the RPG genre. That’s just the kind of humor I like. I await your input.

Why I’m Here

This blog has a two fold purpose: to fulfill a requirement for a class project and to create an RPG as a portfolio piece. In my various posts I will be asking for opinions on the development and design of the game I am creating. My intention is to post various ideas I have and get input from the public about which they like better. When enough time has passed or I have gotten sufficient results, I will continue on with the development using the most popular idea. I do not currently intend to take suggestions outside of what I post, but I am not opposed to taking them.
